It's always nice when a Bruin breaks through the East Coast & SCum Bias and gets some National Recognition, so congratulations are in order for Bruce Davis. Davis is one of only 43 players to be named to the Lombardi Award Watch List. The award goes to the Nation's Best Lineman, and thanks to Davis' 12.5 Sacks last year, he couldn't be ignored this year.
Davis, one of only 7 Pac-10 players on the list, will be missing one key ingredient of his 2006 success: Justin Hickman. The graduated Hickman was the Defensive End opposite Davis, and he too recorded 12.5 Sacks. Offensive Lines had to account for two Super Sackers, and they were often unable to do so. They couldn't double both of them, and the one that they didn't would burn them. Just ask sc, and Booty, and also, check out one of the photos below. With Davis AND Hickman, Offenses had to pick their poison. This year, Davis will not have that luxury. No offense to Hickman's replacement, but whoever it ends up being is unlikely to take the heat/attention off of Davis. After all, Davis is a Lombardi Award Candidate!
It would be great to see Davis, a second-generation Bruin player (whose Dad has two Super Bowl Rings) excel in 2007, while Wendell Tyler's kid is across town being SCum. And by the way, Justin Hickman's Dad played for sc, but Justin saw the light, came to Westwood (which is the admirable form of treason), and exited after a triumphant victory over the heart-broken trojans (in his final Home game).
Bruce Davis wasn't the only Bruin Footballer to get some great news this week. Former back-up QB David Koral just got invited to compete for a job with the Tennessee Titans. What is it about former trojan player-turned-Titans Head Coach Jeff Fisher and Bruin back-up QB's? One of the most productive players over the past few years for Fisher was Drew Bennett. Bennett was the Bruins' back-up QB until they moved him to Wide Receiver, where he showed enough promise to get a shot in the NFL. In Tennessee, he had a Pro Bowl-caliber year, setting Records -- formerly Jerry Rice-held Records -- for Receiving Touchdowns.
Unfortunately, Bennett will not be there to help Koral get acclimated, as Bennett is now a member of the St. Louis Rams, where with Torry Holt as HIS bookend, he just may set some MORE Records, especially if Ram Starting QB Marc Bulger is healthy.
Back in Tennessee, the Titans' Starting QB is the immortal Vince Young, who single-handedly destroyed troy's self-imagined dynasty, then single-handedly turned around the Titans' season, and entire Franchise. Behind Young is Kerry Collins. And behind Collins will be either Koral or Kent Smith, a 24-year old from the University of Central Michigan (the Chippewas). Perhaps Koral's experience in the training camp of the Indianapolis Colts last year will make the difference this time, and put him over the hump.
Below are 10 photos of Bruce Davis, David Koral, and some Cheerleaders, just so that today's front page photo can't be seen as an evil "tease." Here's wishing happy endings to Davis, Koral, and all of you.
