Sanchez: "Who is #1?"
Carroll: "You are #6."
Sanchez: "I am not a number; I am a Free Man!!"
Carroll: [evil laugh].
Pete Carroll has done it again. You knew that sooner or later, sc's All-$tar recruiting would catch up with them, and it looks like the meltdown is coming. Carroll already lost a highly-touted Quarterback last year, when Rocky Hinds deserted troy. Then, he overloaded his Tailback position full of malcontents who all think that they should be the Starter. In fact, it SEEMS like they were all sort of "promised" the Starting role, so it would come as no surprise if a few of them bail. And now, Pete might lose another supposed phenom QB.
This week, the trojans added former Arkansas QB Mitch Mustain to their roster. Mustain was a Freshman who went 8-0 as a Starter for the Razorbacks last Season, after being the most highly-recruited athlete in the History of Arkansas.
But, just like a true trojan, he was not content with winning -- He needed more personal glory. Apparently, he was unhappy with the Razorbacks' Offense. He felt that they were running the ball too much. And this was after Arkansas hired Mustain's high school Coach as Offensive Coordinator. But Arkansas realized that they had the 2nd best Running Back in the Country, and "foolishly" decided to utilize him to the max, instead of relying on the arm of a Freshman QB.
So the Coordinator went to Tulsa, and Mustain was supposed to follow. As a matter of fact, the biggest trojan honk on Bruinzone guaranteed that Mustain would NOT be coming to troy (based on all his "inside" information).
Well, Mustain must not have read this trojan jerk's prediction, because he's on his way to Fig Tech, and he'll be on the roster in 2008. And guess who feels even more foolish than the know-nothing prognosticator: That's right, former sc QB of the Future, Mark Sanchez. Sanchez thought that he would surpass John David Booty on the depth chart a long time ago, to become the next Matt Leinart, but now it looks like he is the next Matt Cassell. Cassell is the guy who backed up Leinart, and never played a meaningful down. But Sanchez can take solace: Cassell is pulling down a paycheck by holding Tom Brady's jock on the Patriot's sideline.
But what are the odds that Sanchez will stick around to be a clipboard holder? If you were that highly-recruited, would you be satisfied getting splinters in your ass for 4 years? In addition to Mustain, the trojans also have high school All-Everything QB Aaron Corp coming in for 2008, so if Sanchez manages to beat out Mustain, he better hope that Corp redshirts (or at least is slow-developing). Of course if you were the best QB in the Nation as a High School Senior, would you be interested in taking a year off?
Sanchez should call Arkansas -- Don't they have an open slot now? Even if Sanchez thinks that he can win the sc job, he's still got to be pretty angry with his Head Coach. It's only logical that Sanchez should feel slighted by Carroll's recruitment of Mustain. Apparently, Carroll has no faith in Sanchez' abilities, and felt like he had to take drastic measures to shore up the QB position for 2008. That should damage Sanchez' confidence to the point where he might not even be effective for Tulsa, or for whatever mid-major lands him.
So, if and when he escapes, Sanchez' legacy at sc is going to be that he got caught performing drunken vandalism, and that he got a walk on a Rape/Assault accusation. Maybe all his immature antics are responsible for Carroll losing interest in him. Either that, or Mark's on-the-field performance was just as bad as his off-the-field behavior.
Either way, don't be surprised to see Sanchez feel dirty, wipe the ketchup and mustain off himself, and head for cleaner pastures.
