This is the one copy of Playboy where we actually want to read an article...
When it comes to discovering top-notch TALENT, Playboy Magazine has always had a good reputation. And in the upcoming August edition, Playboy will unveil their 2007 Preseason All-American Football Team, which will include UCLA Senior Strong Safety Chris Horton.
As part of the honor, Horton gets to spend a weekend in Phoenix for the Photo Shoot Gala. If there are Bunnies or Playmates there, they'll see Horton's dreadlocks, think he's Ricky Williams, and ask him for Weed, or maybe some Blow. Hopefully, Horton can keep his nose clean. After all, it's Chris HORTON, not Chris SNORTIN'. Besides, he has NOTHING IN COMMON with those girls: As a Strong Safety for one of the best Defenses in the Country, he's all about STOPPING PENETRATION INTO THE END ZONE. Also, the girls are Centerfolds, but Bruins never fold.
Sometimes, Bruins grace a magazine COVER. In fact, their "Sports Illustrated" covers are numerous and legendary. "Street & Smith" may not be SI, and we know that they put a different cover out in every major media market, but it's still cool for Bruce Davis that he will be the local S&S Cover Boy (even if Playboy neglected him).
The last piece of UCLA Football news this week is that Chris Joseph has been named to the Rimington Award Watch List. That honor goes to the Country's Best Center. If Joseph ends up winning, the Bruins will probably be in a BCS Bowl game. Because for him to suddenly vault to the top of the Position, the Bruins would have to be getting some massive exposure, like that which accompanies being the #1 Team in the Polls. Another way to view it: If he is doing that NOTICEABLY well, then the Bruin Offense will be as good as the already-proven Defense, and UCLA will be BCS-bound. If the Center is getting National-level recognition throughout the year, that means that Chris Markey will be exploiting interior holes, and Ben Olson will have time to throw (and good Shotgun snaps). And that all translates to winning.
Speaking of winning, the Bruin Basketball team just got another huge commit, from High School Junior, 6' 9" Drew Gordon. Gordon is a Center in High School, but will be a Power Forward in Westwood. He is one of the Top Recruits in the nation, and reportedly the West's #1 Big Man (in his Class). He's known for his leaping ability and Defense, and says that he's coming to UCLA because of Ben Howland's emphasis on DEFENSE, and Ben's lack of reliance on a run-and-gun Offensive mentality. The announcement sounded good, with one (soon-to-be-very-common) drawback: He made it sound like he's choosing UCLA because Howland has supported the early departures of Jordan Farmar and Arron Afflalo. In other words, don't expect to see Commissioner Gordon in commission at UCLA after his Freshman year.
It's not the ideal scenario, but we're OKAY with a revolving door of 5-Star, 1-Year phenoms, as long as Final Four appearances are once again a GIVEN, foregone conclusion, with at least a smattering of Titles sprinkled in.
It's an honor to be a Playmate of the MONTH. It's nice to be Miss December, and for UCLA it might be better to be Miss March/Early April. But the Bruins want to be perennial Playmates of the YEAR, and with Howland at the helm, the Bruins might finally get to POSE IN THE SHOWER (of confetti).
