Derrick Williams picked the one WRONG way to follow in the footsteps of fellow Bruin Star Troy Aikman: He endured too many blows to the head.
Aikman retired from the Cowboys after too many opponents laid their hats on him, in the hat area; Williams is being forced to retire for the same reason, and unfortunately, it's happening prior to his Senior year at UCLA.
Williams was going to share time with Kahlil Bell as Chris Markey's back-up, and after Derrick's recent success, hopes for him were high. In the 4th quarter of the Big "13-9" Game, Williams carried twice in a row, gaining 13 yards and a first down, on the drive that netted the Bruins their 11th, 12th, and 13th points. And that was against the "vaunted" defense of suc, when they absolutely KNEW that the Bruins were going to run the ball.
In the ill-fated Bowl game that followed, Williams was productive once again, gaining over 5 yards a carry and catching a couple of passes for 15 yards as well. Too bad that his final game has to be one that the team and fans would prefer to forget...but he'll always have "13-9."
Below is a photo-tribute to Derrick Williams, a player who fought his way out of disfavor to contribute to one of the greatest Upsets in History. Were sure that all good Bruin fans wish him well, and hope that he suffers no further long-term effects from the injuries that he sustained while wearing the Blue and Gold and winning the coveted City Championship.
