USC really put the "Fuk-u" in "Fukuzaki" on Thursday night, when they robbed Rob Fukuzaki of a local sportscasting coup.
During last night's decisive Game 4 of the NBA Finals, ABC was airing promotions with Fukuzaki pimping his postgame show called "Sports Zone." The big tease? He was going to have future trojan O.J. Mayo in studio.
Then, after MVP Tony Parker and the Spurs completed their 4-game sweep of the Cavaliers (with a 1-point victory, thanks to two last-minute screw-ups by LeBron James), when ABC cut to Sports Zone, Fukuzaki announced that Mayo would not be appearing.
He said that earlier in the week, usc refused to help him set something up with Mayo. But, they said that if HE could set it up directly with O.J., to go for it with their blessing. Then Rob pulled it off, and got the elusive booking, only to have sc pull the plug on it at the 11th hour.
Probably, they never had any intention of letting O.J. appear -- It's just that they didn't think Fukuzaki could make it happen. But they lied to Rob, just to get him off their backs.
An how do you think this blackout will go over in Mayo's eyes? After all, he's only coming to sc FOR the media attention, and as soon as he gets some, sc forbids him from doing it. And what is it that they are afraid of? Do they think he's an idiot, or a psychotic? What's he going to say in a two-minute interview to get himself in trouble? Well, actually...
What if Rob asked him about cruising for Weed in the 'hood, or all the tantrums and issues that had him jumping from school to school, or the money he's reputed to already be banking? Mayo has SO much to hide, that sc was probably making a prudent decision. So just like that, moments before going to air, Mayo was transported from the Sports Zone to the Twilight Zone.
So, could this be enough overzealous Nazi micromanagement/censorship/slavedriving to make Mayo reconsider his desire to play for Tim Floyd and to live in cockroach-infested dorms for a year?
If Mayo ultimately blows off sc and doesn't enroll, their Basketball program's support will take a hit from which it will take a decade to recover. Their only hope was a mega-phenom like Mayo, so if he doesn't come, sc Basketball -- Galen or no Galen -- will be right back to what it's always been: Neglected and insignificant.
