Back in April, Bruin Safety and Birmingham High School grad Dennis Keyes told the Trojan-Haters Club that he would try personally to get Birmingham's current Star Running Back Milton Knox to come to UCLA. However, he added that no matter how hard he tries, the final choice is still Milton's.
Well, Milton made his final choice last month, and he made it public on Monday. Knox will be coming to Westwood next year, in his effort to CONTINUE winning Championships. The Knox-led Birmingham Patriots are the Defending City Champions of Los Angeles High School Football, just like UCLA is the Defending City Champion in College Football. The Patriots won in 2006 for the second time in three years with Knox, who happened to be the City Player of the Year last season, as a Junior.
When you see this kid's highlight reel, you can't help but think about Maurice Jones-Drew. Like MJ-D, Knox has a low center of gravity, at 5'8", 200lbs. He is listed with only a 4.6 40, but he has continuosly shown breakaway speed in High School, amassing 2374 yards and 29 Touchdowns last season.
If Knox makes people remember Jones-Drew in 2008, it will be a GOOD thing for UCLA.
Speaking of good things for UCLA, three players got some National recognition on Monday, when two different Award Watch Lists came out. Running Back Chris Markey is on the Maxwell Award List, for Best Player in the Nation, while Chris Horton and Bruce Davis are both on the list for the Bednarik Award, for Best Defensive Player.
And speaking of the "best player in the Nation," Kobe Bryant may want to re-think his desire to bail on the Lakers -- because the Lakers are close to pulling off a trade for Kevin Garnett. There might be other teams involved, but basically, the Lakers might be able to get Kevin Garnett from the T-Wolves, by giving up Andrew Bynum and Lamar Odom. Kwame Brown and a Draft pick might also go away from L.A.
Hopefully, the Lakers will keep Kareem in their employ, even though his main pupil is Bynum, with Brown also getting lessons. More important is that they don't let Jordan Farmar slip away in any deal. With some serious luck, the Lakers will draft Arron Afflalo to fill in the holes created by the multi-player deal.
Kobe's agent says that Kobe wants out regardless of what deals are made, but Bryant HAS to re-consider now. Minnesota GM Kevin McHale is a Laker-Hater since his Celtic days, who doesn't want to let L.A. get Garnett, but Garnett's contract is coming up, and Minnesota has to do something.
Kobe should also be aware that other teams may not be willing to give up their entire rosters for him (Kobe). For instance, the Chicago Bulls just said that they are not interested, despite Kobe's interest in playing in Chicago. You wouldn't think that he'd want to play in the house that Jordan built, but now, he won't get to, even if he DID want to.
Kobe and Garnett could be just as successful as Shaq-Wade or Duncan-Parker. With Farmar-Walton feeding them the rock, all the Lakers would need is some bulk under the basket to immediately contend for the Title.
