When people are unclear on the concept of UCLA's superiority over usc in Sports and in Life, they are often shown this classic photo, of infamous trojan QB Todd Marijuanovich flipping off Bruin Matt Darby, who was only offering to help Todd get up off his ass.
If that doesn't make them see the light, then they are told of the two schools' most popular athletes/alumni of all time: Jackie Robinson and O.J. Simpson. Can you say, with a French accent, "Viva la difference?" Two opposite ends of the spectrum -- One changed society for the better by striking a huge blow against Racism, while the other evaded justice on a double-murder charge by USING Racism.
And if they still aren't convinced, a story usually comes along that encapsulates the discrepancy. This time it was the misfortune of a SCuzzy trojan criminal, who ran up against a respected Bruin Judge.
When usc professor Barry Landreth was convicted of Fraud for scamming his students and others in an illegal Ponzi SCheme, the Prosecution recommended 4 years in jail. But a UCLA Man knows that 4 years of picking up the soap was not enough for this SCum to clean up his act, so U.S. District Court Judge Cormac Carney -- a former stud Bruin Receiver -- tacked on a couple of bonus years to the sentence.
Carney said that not only did Landreth fleece people out of their life savings, but he took the money and spent it extravagantly on himself, buying a Cadillac Escalade and a stable of Show Horses. Was he trying to breed the next Traveler?
Hopefully, someone will care for the horses while Landreth is serving his tough 6 years. When his cellmates hear how he screwed so many common people out of every penny they had -- just so he could lead "Prancer" around a ring to win a Ribbon -- they'll fill his dance card in a hurry. They might even want to mount him like a stallion.
It was the selfish extravagance that moved Carney to embellish the requested sentence with a couple of extra years, for Barry to think about what he's done.
If Landreth were smart (and he's obviously not), he would have asked Carney to recuse himself -- Because how could a Bruin Football Hero ever give a trojan a fair trial? After personally playing against sc, and seeing all the cheap shots, dirty tactics, cheating, arrogance and just generally poor sportsmanship, added to an almost certain awareness of the myriad unpunished trojan violations from O.J.1 through O.J.2, how could he possibly be expected to remain unbiased?
So the admired Bruin Judge banishes the sleazy trojan conman, once again confirming the differing places that UCLA and usc have in society. And speaking of Good Hands Cormac, it looks like the near future is also in good hands in terms of the overall reputation of Bruins to be a cut above their Rivals, as incoming UCLA Basketballer Kevin Love was awarded the Gatorade National Player of the Year Award. Is it in you?
Of course, sc's O.J. Mayo might have been considered, based on his on-the-court performance, but this Award is about the Person, not just the Player, so Love won it hands down, and Mayo never had a chance. And Gatorade didn't have a hidden agenda in selecting Love -- Kevin also won similar awards from FOUR other National organizations.
