BREAKING NEWS: The Athletic Department and the Football Office have decided to NOT REQUEST the UCLA Spirit Squad to perform at the Scrimmage on Saturday.
Is there anyone on the planet who is more disappointed in this decision than US?
Well, instead of bitching and moaning about it, we decided to try to see it from THEIR side.
Apparently, in order to have the Spirit Squad perform officially, they must be allotted a certain amount of time, and they must be allowed to at least finish their routines, and not be repeatedly cut off mid-song.
Well, at the Scrimmage, there are no TV timeouts, so they would have had to occasionally stop the game flow, and they might have lost some actual game TIME. So the decision came down from Coach Dorrell's office that they would rather make Football priority #1.
So, the fans lose out, but the message being sent is clear: This year is going to see a serious, dedicated, un-distracted team, who will take a businesslike, no-nonsense approach to winning the National Championship.
We still think it sucks, that we won't get to see the new Squad in action, up close, for the first time. And, without the Cheerleaders, the fan response will not be as loud or organized, so the players won't get to feel the love the way they should. The decision MIGHT even hurt attendance, as word leaks out through selfish jerks like us, who couldn't hold back from reporting it.
However, this is the ONLY chance for the members of the Spirit Squad to actually attend a UCLA Football Event as FANS, without having to be "ON" all the time, under a microscope, and without having to deal with the rigors of performing. Plus, we respect what Karl (apparently) is trying to do, and we're all for a focused, determined group of guys. But, if it doesn't work, can we go back to being entertained at the Scrimmages by our very own World Class performers?
Below are 4 photos from last year's Fall Scrimmage... not nearly as entertaining as the shots from the year before, but if it's "all about Football" for you too, then you should appreciate them.
